Covenant and Promise Essays -- essays research papers
COVENANT AND PROMISE â⬠¢ BERITH = Hebrew word for covenant â⬠¢ Berith is found in the earliest records in the Bible and is fundamental to Hebrew religion. In Latin it is Testamentum. â⬠¢ The Old Testament and the New Testaments means the old and the new covenants. A covenant is a promise. â⬠¢ Chesed = Hebrew word for the attitude of loyalty and faithfulness which both parties should observe towards one another in a covenant relationship. â⬠¢ The covenant ââ¬Ëchesedââ¬â¢ of God is so strong that it can never pass away. The Covenant with Abraham â⬠¢ The records of ancient Israel were not written down until the time of King David, who had a court and a scribe. This was the time when Israel possessed the land of Canaan. â⬠¢ The records were then redacted at later dates, significantly in the period of the exile (597BCE) â⬠¢ There are two covenants recorded in Genesis made with Abraham. â⬠¢ Genesis 15. Abraham is told to kill a selection of animals and is then put into a deep sleep. A flaming pot passes through. This is a ceremony to seal the covenant. The covenant was one sided, God made promises, Abraham received them. The Covenant with Abraham â⬠¢ Covenant 2 â⬠¢ Genesis 17 records the outward sign of the covenant, circumcision. This is still an important practise today. â⬠¢ 17:9 God also said to Abraham: "On your part, you and your descendants after you must keep my covenant throughout the ages. This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you that you must keep: every male among you shall be circumcised. Circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and that shall be the mark of the covenant between you and me. â⬠¢ 17:12 Throughout the ages, every male among you, when he is eight days old, shall be circumcisedâ⬠¦ Thus my covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting pact. â⬠¢ Scholars believe this is a later covenant influenced by the experiences of the exile. The Promises of the Covenant with Abraham â⬠¢ Abraham is promised that he will be the father of... ...en the The Kingdom of God reigns once more on earth. Second Isaiah â⬠¢ Another prophet of the exile. â⬠¢ Absolute monotheism emerged during the period of the exile. â⬠¢ If there is only one God, then he is also the God of the nations. â⬠¢ Isaiah pictures a renewal of the covenant on return from exile at Jerusalem. â⬠¢ Significantly all nations will come to worship Israelââ¬â¢s God. ISAIAH 40:1 Comfort, give comfort to my people, Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; Indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins. 40:3 A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! 40:4 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; The rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. 40:5 Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all mankind shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. Causes and Effects of the Salem Witch Trials Essay
1692 in Salem, Massachusetts was a time of fear, allegation, and deceit. It was the time of the Salem witch trials. Family feuds, eccentric personalities, and even keeping dolls in your home were reasons for accusations. Fueled by religious fanatics and young girls screaming for attention, literally, no one was safe from the insanity of the witch-hunt. This paper is intended to discuss the causes of this hysteria, some of the trials that took place during the year 1692, and what finally stopped the madness of the witch-hunt. The Salem witch trials were fueled by many different things, but the beginning of this hysteria can be traced back to a small group of girls in Salem Village. Betty Parris, a nine-year-old girl with poor health, lived with her father Rev. Samuel Parris, who was the local minister, her mother, an invalid, and her cousin, Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams was a twelve-year-old orphan who worked for her keep; she did most of the chores because of Bettyââ¬â¢s illness and cared for her aunt. When they were finished with their chores, there was not much for the girls to do; Rev. Parris objected to games because he thought that ââ¬Å"playing was a sign of idleness, and idleness allowed the Devil to work his mischief.â⬠(http://www.salemwitchtrials.com) Reading books was a popular pastime during the winter. Most popular, were Books about fortune telling and prophecy. These were read, unsurprisingly, mostly by young girls and adolescents. Some of the girls who read these books forme d small groups to use the divination techniques that they had read about. Betty, Abigail, and two other girls formed one of these groups and were assisted by the Parris familyââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ black slave, Tituba. (http://www.salemwitchtrials.com) Tituba, who was originally from Barbados, was very knowledgeable about the voodoo religion, and often told the girls stories of voodoo, witchcraft, and demons. Other girls began to join the group to listen to Titubaââ¬â¢s stories and tell their fortunes. Betty and Abigail were disquieted by their fortunes and began to act strangely. They were ââ¬Å"having fits, making strange noises, and contorting their bodies.â⬠(http://www.paralumun.com) Rev. Parris noticed their odd behavior and asked the help of Dr. William Griggs. Dr. Griggs could find nothing wrong with the girls medically, so he said they were bewitched. The girls were asked to name the witches that had bewitched them and they spokeà the names of three women. Tituba, Sarah Osborne, and Sarah Good were all very likely witches. Sarah Osborne had not been to church in over a year, and Sarah Good was homeless and went door to door asking for alms, if turned away empty handed, Sarah Good would mumble words as she left t hat many thought were curses. The cases of the three women were investigated at the Salem Village Meetinghouse. During their questioning, Betty, Abigail, and six of their friends often claimed that the womenââ¬â¢s spirits were biting them pinching them or appearing as a small animal or bird. Despite the girls, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne said they were innocent. Tituba, however, confessed to being a witch. Her confession consisted of ââ¬Å"red rats, talking cats, and a tall man dressed in black. She stated that the man clothed in black made her sign in a book, and that Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne and others, whose names she could not read, had also signed this book.â⬠(http://www.salemwitchtrials.com) Tituba continued, saying that a black dog had threatened her and made her to hurt the girls. She also said that she had ââ¬Å"ridden through the air on a pole to witches meetings with the other two accused.â⬠(http://www.paralumun.com) Then Tituba stated that there were about six other witches and their leader was a tall white-haired man. (http://www.paralumun.com) Titubaââ¬â¢s t hree-day confession confirmed the villagerââ¬â¢s beliefs and initiated the Salem witch trials. As the trials gained momentum, no one was safe from accusations; the girls accused people regardless of age, health, or public opinion. Everyone was at risk of being accused, from the very young, such as Dorcas Good, a four-year-old boy who was jailed and put in chains; to the old and well liked, like Rebecca Nurse who was a seventy-one year old lady and was considered kind and generous. Abigail Hobbs was already mentally unstable when she was charged with witchcraft. She confessed and gave the names of nine other witches. The judges accepted her confession instead of dismissing her as insane. On April 21, 1692, Nehemiah Abbot, William and Deliverance Hobbs, Sarah and Edward Bishop, Mary Ester, Mary Black, Sarah Wilds, and Mary English were arrested because of Abigail Hobbsââ¬â¢s accusations. (http://www.paralumun.com) Bridget Bishop had been charged with witchcraft twelve years ago; she had been tried but not convicted. When there was work being done on her cellar, ââ¬Å"poppets â⬠were found in the walls. Some of themà were without heads and they were all stuck with pins. She was tried on June 2, 1692, and hanged June 10, 1692. Rebecca Nurse was tried on June 29, 1692. The jury found Rebecca Nurse not guilty but when they revealed their verdict in her case, the girls ââ¬Å"howled, thrashed about, and rolled around on the floor. With the courtroom in an uproar, the judges asked the jury to reconsider its decisionâ⬠(http://www.salemwitchtrials.com) Rebecca Nurse was found guilty, and hanged July 19, 1692. Rev. George Burroughs was the former Salem Village minister. He was accused of being the coven leader of all the witches in Massachusetts. (http://www.paralumun.com) The girls also called him the ââ¬Å"Black Ministerâ⬠and agreed that he was the leader of the Salem Coven. He had been widowed three times, and there was a rumor that he had mistreated his wives. When he was angry, he would sometimes brag about his demonic powers. He was tried on August 5, 1692, found guilty, and hanged on August 19, 1692. When he was being hanged, Rev. Burroughs said the Lordââ¬â¢s Prayer perfectly. The Puritans believed that a wizard could not say the Lordââ¬â¢s Prayer without error. (http://www.salemwitchtrials.com) During the winter of 1692-93, the witch trials began to loose public support. A man named Giles Corey who was accused of witchcraft refused to stand trial and was crushed to death. This, Rev. Burroughsââ¬â¢ prayer, and a letter written by an accused asking ââ¬Å"if it be possible, that no more innocent blood be shed, which undoubtedly cannot be avoided in the way and course you go in.â⬠(http://www.salemwitchtrials.com) This and the fact that the Governors wife had been accused of witchcraft caused the Governor to issue orders to protect those accused of witchcraft and ban the arrest of other suspected witches unless it was necessary on October 12, 1692. People began to ignore the cries of witchcraft and the last trial was held in January of 1693. In May of 1693, the governor ended the witch trials for good when he pardoned all of the remaining accused. With nineteen hanged and one crushed, the Salem witch trials finally ended. (http://www.salemwitchtrials.com) This is how the Salem witch trials began and ended. In my opinion, the Salem witch-hunt was revolting. The destruction of innocent human lives was atrocious. I think that the ââ¬Å"witchesâ⬠were all in the imaginations of a few girls who wanted attention and power.

Arguement to Alter World History The Modern Era to Favor...
I am a high school student writing to urge you to take a stronger position on the issue of the atomic bomb attacks against Japan in your textbook World History: The Modern Era. I understand your desire to examine the issue objectively and refrain from offending those with a personal connection to the event. However, it is my strong opinion that you should support one side of the issue, specifically the side in favor of the atomic bomb strike, for the reason that they were necessary. President Harry S. Trumanââ¬â¢s decision to attack Japan with nuclear weapons, while criticized for moral reasons, was justified by the unyielding resolve of the Japanese people, the substantial remaining resources of the Japanese war machine, and massive estimated casualty rates associated with an invasion of Japan. By 1945 two of the Axis powers, Germany and Italy, had surrendered to the Allies; only the Japanese Empire persisted. Japan had been on the defensive for much of the war and now stood litt le chance of winning. Despite its many losses, however, the Japanese military retained sufficient manpower and resources to continue fending off an American invasion of Japan for an unknown amount of time. Without the usage of atomic weaponry, the war could have gone on indefinitely. According to Secretary of War Henry Stimson, an army of five million men was still fighting in defense of Japan (Doc 1). The United States may have achieved naval and aerial superiority, but any invasion of Japan would

Ellisons Definition of an Invisible Man in Battle Royal Essay Examples
Reading through Ralph Ellisonââ¬â¢s story ââ¬Å"Battle Royalâ⬠one comes to the conclusion that if a man yields to the power of majority without struggle, he dooms himself and his posterity to infinite slavery. Itââ¬â¢s no mere chance that the protagonistââ¬â¢s grandfather, laying on his deathbed, says nothing, but a wish for his sons ââ¬Å"to keep up the good fight. (1)â⬠At the time of the old manââ¬â¢s death, his words had little effect on his relatives, who were afraid of doing something ââ¬Å"against the wishes of white folksâ⬠(1).à Nevertheless the protagonist unveils the puzzle of his grandfatherââ¬â¢s last will later in his life. The storyââ¬â¢s told from the first person. The author adds an element of reminiscences to the narration to show the changes in protagonistââ¬â¢s perceptions of reality over time.à The narrator doesnââ¬â¢t color the story with biases or his interests; on the contrary he simply describes the events that happened upon his high school graduation, making the reader judge for himself. à à Thinking of old times, the protagonist recalls a fighting contest, Battle Royal, where Ellison creates a perfect setting for the readers to have an idea of a humiliating environment surrounding the fighters and their passivity and unwillingness to destroy the present state of affairs. To underline the feeling of humbleness, humility, self-pity and fightersââ¬â¢ total obedience to white people, the author observes the battle attendees through protagonistââ¬â¢s eyes: ââ¬Å"They were all there-bankers, lawyers, judges, doctors, fire chiefs, teachers, merchants. Even one of the more fashionable pastorsâ⬠(2). Moreover, the protagonist feels neither scorn nor disdain towards the guests, but rather submission, acceptance of his fate and ââ¬Å"blind terrorâ⬠(3). The superiority of white men is reinforced with their disparaging treatment of fighters: ââ¬Å"Let me at that big nigger!â⬠(3); ââ¬Å"These niggers look like they are about to pray!â⬠(6); ââ¬Å"We mean to do right by you, but youve got to know your place at all timesâ⬠(9). à The whole scenery surrounding these people is being described as if it wasnââ¬â¢t ââ¬Å"the main ballroom of the leading hotelâ⬠(2), but rather a circus with both fighters and spectators pic tured as wild animals, only the former represented the caged victims and the latter free predators: ââ¬Å"posture clumsy like that of an intoxicated pandaâ⬠(2); ââ¬Å"That night I dreamed I was at a circusâ⬠(10). Passivity, blind obedience to humiliating orders and all-absorbing acceptance of oneââ¬â¢s pathetic existence are best illustrated by the behavior of fighters towards each other. Thus before the fight the protagonist observes the inmates around with an absolute indifference, neither does he care about the coming battle at that moment, being more concerned with the speech he was praised for at the graduation ceremony: ââ¬Å"Not from a distaste for fighting but because I didnt care too much for the other fellows who were to take partââ¬Å" (2). Being left for the final round with another fighter, the protagonist offers money to the opponent for faking the latterââ¬â¢s defeat, so that the formerââ¬â¢s given a chance to say his speech in front of the superior public. He is neither concerned with his present condition, nor with money being on stake, his mind seems constantly occupied by his speech on humility as ââ¬Å"the very essence of progressâ⬠(1), which makes him a bright student in the eyes of the men of different color: ââ¬Å"I wanted to deliver my speech and he came at me as though he meant to beat it out of meâ⬠(5); ââ¬Å"I wanted to de liver my speech more than anything else in the world, because I felt that only these men could judge truly my ability, and now this stupid clown was ruining my chancesâ⬠(6). The speech, being present throughout the narration in the protagonistââ¬â¢s mind, and finally delivered in the end of the story, is yet another example of yielding to the wishes of majority. When during his speech the protagonist stumbles and incidentally says ââ¬Å"equalityâ⬠rather than ââ¬Å"responsibilityâ⬠, a man from the crowd asks him to repeat his words. The orator repeats ââ¬Å"responsibilityâ⬠, denying having said otherwise and continues his talk without paying attention to humiliating laughter around. If only men were not passive towards each others, if only they tried to fight for the rights given by God and even if the protagonist in the story accepted having said ââ¬Å"equalityâ⬠, it could have spurred others in the community to do the same, to act and set faces against inequality much earlier rather than tolerate a belittling treatment and abuse through decades. ââ¬Å"It seemed a whole century would pass before I would roll free, a century in which I was seared through the deepest levels of my body to the fearful breath within me and the breath seared and heated to the point of explosionâ⬠(7). If only the realization of injustice came earlier, the protagonist might still have been able to escape his grandparent haunting him with his last words. On the contrary, the ultimate acceptance of his status and inferiority to white men, made the protagonist ââ¬Å"invisibleâ⬠in the society, further undermining his peopleââ¬â¢s right for freedom.

Reasons to Not Allow Women in the Front Lines - 1775 Words
About 200,000 plus women are on active duty for the military out of 1.4 million serving. Out of the 200,000, 2.7 percent of them make up the front line units (CNN). This is approximately 5,400 women that are enlisted and are fighting on the front lines. This number is very low and should be much higher. This number represents the idea that the military believes women should not be on the front lines. Many people in society believe that what the military is doing is wrong and females should be able to fight on the front lines. There has been an official ban on women fighting on the front lines by the military. Recently many people are discussing the idea of lifting the ban and giving females the ability to fight in the front lines while the other party believes that women should not. This ban was stated in 1994 when the Pentagon restricted women from artillery, armor, infantry and other combat roles. In recent years, women had found themselves in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and according to the Pentagon, hundreds of thousands of these women have been deployed in those conflicts (NYTIMESBANLIFT). One major benefit of lifting the ban will be the amount of jobs that will be created. This will allow a boost in job openings in the army. No matter how strong you are, the only thing that matters is the will to fight and to protect the nation. This controversy stems from criticisms such as womenââ¬â¢s physicality versus menââ¬â¢s, the association of sexual-related situations within the military, and a history of failed gender-integration training. Question: 1. In a public-key system using RSA, you intercept the ciphertext C =10 sent to a user whose public key is e=5, n=35. What is the plaintext M?2. In an RSA system, the public key of a given user is e=31, n=3599. What is the plaintext M?. Answer: 1. In a public-key system using RSA, you intercept the ciphertext C =10 sent to a user whose public key is e=5, n=35. What is the plaintext M? Cipher text C = 10 Public key PU = {e, n} = {5, 35} Therefore, f(n) = 24. It can be assume that two prime numbers are p = 5 and q = 7. Therefore, n = p*q = 5*7=35 f(n) = (p-1)(q-1)=(5-1)(7-1)=4*6=24 gcd(f(n), e) = gcd(24, 5) =1, 1 e f(n) Therefore, d e-1 mod f(n) equivalent to ed 1 mod f(n) or ed mod f(n) =1 mod 24 =1, and d = 5 because {e = 5, f(n) = 24. So, 5d} Now, the private key PR = {d, n} = {5, 35}. On the basis of RSA decryption algorithm, M = Cd mod n = 105 mod 35 = 5 Therefore, C = Me mod n = 55 mod 35 = 10 Therefore, we conclude that the plaintext M is 5. 2. In an RSA system, the public key of a given user is e=31, n=3599. What is the Private Key of the user? Since p and q must both be prime and n = 3599 = 15961, it can be assume that p=59 and q=61, and: (n) = (p-1)(q-1) = (59-1)(61-1) = 3480 d = (1 + k (n))/e = (1 + 3480k)/31 = -13921/31 = -449 (for k = -4) d = -449 (mod 3480) = 3031 (mod 3480) Bibliography Rani, S., Mittal, H. and Director, S.P.G.O.I., 2015. Hamlet 15 Essay Example For Students
Hamlet 15 Essay Reasons Hamlet Delays his RevengeHamlet as a play and as a person has been analyzed for centuries. One of the main ideas focused upon in this story is why Hamlet delays so long in getting his revenge on Claudius for killing his father. There have been many ideas and many theories for Hamlets behavior, but there is probably a plethora of factors that influence Hamlet. Hamlets thoughts about the ghost, his Uncle, and his mother, may have all led to his delay. The first reason for the delay may be that Hamlet was not completely sure that Claudius had killed his father. The ghost who claims to be Hamlets father and has some unfinished business on earth asks for Hamlet to revenge his death. The reason that Hamlet is not sure whether or not the ghost is telling the truth is that he feels the ghost may be the devil. This idea is portrayed when Hamlet says, The spirit that I have seen may be a devil, and the devil hath power t assume a pleasing shape. (I.ii. 611-612) Hamlet is wondering if this is a ghost from heaven or a ghost from hell. No one wants to go to hell, so Hamlet must make sure that he is doing what is right. He does not want to be influenced by the devil in any way. The Christian thoughts of the time stated that vengeance was a sin. Hamlet wants to avenge his fathers death but if he were to kill Claudius his soul may not be saved. Hamlet wants to be a better person than his Uncle, but if he were to become a murderer he would be ju st like Claudius. One more place in this play that focuses on the Christian influence is in Claudiuss bedroom. Hamlet argues with himself that he cannot kill Claudius at the end of Act III scene iii. Hamlet surmises that if he killed Claudius while praying he would be sent to heaven. A villain kills my father, and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villian send to heaven. (III.iii., 76-78) Hamlet would much rather send Claudius to hell for his crimes, but can anyone go to hell when they are killed while praying. Therefore to kill his Uncle at this point would be pointless. Hamlet wants him to suffer for everything that he has done wrong to the family. When the ghost of his father tells Hamlet that he was murdered by the person who now holds his crown, (I.v., 39) Hamlet would like to revenge that death by killing his Uncle Claudius. Hamlet is also upset with his Uncle for marrying his mother only two months after his fathers death. Hamlet thinks a lot, almost too much. In this instance his mind rambles on and he has thoughts that his mother may have been involved with his Uncle before the death of King Hamlet. He thinks that his father was murdered not only for his crown, but also possibly in order to take his wife, Hamlets mother. We understand that Hamlet is upset about this relationship from his very first words of the play. When talking with Claudius he states that he is a little more than kin, and less than kind! (I.ii., 64) This manifests to the audience that Hamlet and Claudius are nothing alike even though they are related. Hamlet has much anger towards Claudius, and has reason according to the ghost to kill him, but Hamlet wants to be sure that Claudius is the man who killed his father. This is when the play within the play comes to be a factor in Hamlets thoughts. The play is designed to draw Claudiuss guilt and fear out into the open. By having a play that has a similar plot and a person being poisoned through the ear, but with a slight twist. While watching the play, Hamlet has Horatio watch the new king to see if he will act guilty when certain scenes arise in the play. As the play moves on, the king becomes more perturbed and acts more like a person who has guilt and something to hide. This idea is brought to a climax when the king ends the play prematurely and says, give me some lights. Away! (III.ii., 275) This act alone gives Hamlet more of a reason for revenge because he is pretty sure that Claudius killed his father, but Hamlet hesitates once again. .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 , .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .postImageUrl , .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 , .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34:hover , .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34:visited , .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34:active { border:0!important; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34:active , .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34 .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udc7383befaa7e15471378afb5293ab34:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: John adams revolution EssayThere must be other reasons for this delay of revenge. Another theory is that Hamlet did not want the responsibility that would come with killing Claudius. The first sign of Hamlets fear is when Hamlet states; I am too much in the sun. (I.ii., 66) He feels that too many people are looking to see what he does. He is too young to have people look to him for the answers. Hamlet is the next in line to become king. When Claudius dies by Hamlets hand, the crown would then be forced upon him. He would have an entire country to lead and would be very much in the sun. Hamlet does not want to have the responsibility of setting things right in the kingdom yet either. Evidence of this is found when he says, O cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right! (I.v., 188-189) That is a lot of responsibility to be thrust on a young man who is not characteristically built that way. Hamlet is asked to commit murder to revenge his fathers death, but perhaps, that ability is not within him. Hamlet is a scholar, not a soldier. For someone like Othello who had spent his whole life on the battlefield revenge would be easy. Death and killing is nothing new to Othello. He has become immune to the thought of bloodshed. On the other hand, Hamlet has lived a life of books and social well being. He has never been called upon to kill someone. Thus he may have a hard time with the concept and delay his revenge because he does not really know where to begin. Another reason that Hamlet may have delayed his revenge upon his Uncle may be better dealt with in psychological terms. Freud would say that Hamlet was displaying the classic signs of the Oedipus complex. This theory states that every male has the internal desire to mate with his mother. This would require that her mate, the father would have to somehow get out of the picture. When Claudius killed King Hamlet, his son may have been a little jealous and a little guilty about his feelings. The reason that this is not mentioned in the play; however, is that these were all unconscious feelings. These types of feelings were also considered to be very wrong and thus, Hamlet was torn. In reality Claudius may have done what Hamlet wanted, but Hamlet still felt guilty about thinking that way. Hamlets main concern is that he wants to gain revenge without losing his dignity. Hamlet needs to somehow set things right without being involved in evil. This is the problem. How do you kill someone, wi thout that being an evil act? It will take much poking and prodding for Hamlet to finally embrace revenge on his Uncle. Hamlet, who is one who thinks through all possibilities, finds that he sometimes he acts rash because he thinks too much.. Hamlet has many things going on in his life and for a young gentleman, some may argue that this is too much. The burden of his fathers death, his mothers quick marriage, and the death of Ophelia, all may have contributed the Hamlets change of thinking. He has become a very confused individual, but still tries to do what is right for him, his family, and his country. Hamlet delayed in seeking his revenge for many reasons. Hamlet was confused and unsure of both himself and the situation. Never before had he encountered such a strange situation. While dealing with both death and marriage he was forced to set things right. Hamlet did not want to have this responsibility or the responsibility of running a kingdom just yet. That just was not the type of person Hamlet was. This was a scholar who had never seen bloodshed caused by his own hand. This was a young man who did not know how to kill. Hamlet was also faced with a challenge of being a good Christian. How could he be sure that the ghost of his father was not the devil trying to trick Hamlet into doing evil where his soul could not be saved? In the end, Hamlet is just a confused individual whose life has been turned upside-down. He becomes lost in his own thoughts and is left to deal with what is right by himself.
